Beckett is Five Months Old

Ok. So I'm a wee bit behind. I've had this post pretty much ready to go for ages (Beck hit the 5 month mark 2 weeks ago!), but never had a chance to get the photos edited. So here's all of the info as of two weeks ago. It's crazy, but so much has already changed, just in that short amount of time.

Five Month Stats
 abt 19 lbs | 26.5 in
wearing 6 month clothes with a few 9 month items in there too & size 3 diapers

[Just for a little comparison, I went back & looked at Zoey's 5 month stats...she weighed 14lbs and was still in size 1 diapers. Crazy how different they are!]

Major Milestones
I know my name!
I can roll from my back to my belly, but not the other way around...yet.

Favorite Pastime
I could blow raspberries all day!

I Love...
my sister
splashing in the tub
flirting with pretty girls
sleeping on my side
playing with my feet & watching what my hands can do
grabbing mommy's nose & rubbing daddy's beard

I Could Do Without...
Eating from a spoon. I'll take my meals in bottle form, thank you.
Tummy time, unless my sister is playing with me.

Favorite Outing
Day trip along the Colonial Parkway to see the changing leaves. I slept just about the whole time, but I hear it was great!

Friday Five - Cozy Style

Happy Friday, friends! We've finally gotten a few shots of cool weather up here, the leaves are changing, and even though tomorrow will be in the 70's, most of the week after will be in the 50's. So all of that calls for some serious coziness as you relax by the fire with a cup of chili or a mug of cocoa and the latest season of the Mindy Project (or Doc McStuffins, depending on your lifestyle choices.).
So, my Friday Five this week is all about the coziness. And, you guys, that crewneck is something you will seriously love this fall/winter. I've had mine for a week and I'm already living in it. So so soft!

And a bonus pick for you guys to curl up under on a cool night. I've been dreaming about these throws for a few years now and I'm hoping for a good Black Friday deal. Fingers crossed!!

Now, I'm usually one of those who insists on waiting until the day after Thanksgiving to even think about Christmas, but the ABC Family (or Freeform. Whatever.) 25 Days of Christmas schedule is out and it's awesome, as usual. I don't know if it's the new baby, or the fact that Zoey is at the right age to make it extra fun, or the fact that the world has been a little crappy lately, but I'm so jazzed for the Christmas season! Can't wait to decorate and get things started. Z and I may or may not have plans to bake a batch of Christmas cookies this weekend and it's all I can do to not take down Fall and bust out the Christmas decor. Anyone else feeling the holiday spirit?!

Beckett is Four Months Old

Four months! I will probably say this every month until he turns 18, but I just can't believe the time is flying by so fast! Beck has grown sooo much in the last month, it's really crazy! He's already wearing size 3 diapers (more for volume than size, if I'm honest-Zoey was still in 1's at 4 months, btw) and I feel like he's constantly eating. Typical boy! And even though we're in bit of a fussy period right now, he's still the happiest, smiliest baby on the block & will actually move out of a fuss, into a sly sideways grin, & back into a fuss, like he forgot he was cranky for a second in the middle there.

Four Month Stats
18lb 7oz (95%) | 25.6 in (75%)
I can't remember the exact measurement of his head, but I do recall that the nurse said it was in the 98th %! #bobblehead
Mostly 3-6 month clothes with a few 6 months stuff thrown in.

I drool 24/7. Unless I'm spitting up.
I can grab & hold onto toys and bring them to my mouth to chew, shake 'em, or toss them around.
I like to sleep on my side & can rotate 180 degrees in my crib at night.
The jumperoo is my favorite place to hang out these days.
My chubby cheeks are super ticklish.
Tummy time is the worst. After a few minutes, I like to just smoosh my face into the floor until Mommy rolls me over & picks me up.
I really like to sit up, especially in the bumbo.
I'm so close to rolling over, but my silly arm keeps getting in my way.
Despite my weight, I'm no Michelin man, but I do have some serious thunder thighs.
I'm huge flirt. Hey. The ladies love me, what can I say?!

Halloween Reads

Well folks, we're f i n a l l y feeling a little Fallish over here in VB - temps in the 60s today, a crockpot full of potato soup simmering in the kitchen, a trip to the pumpkin farm on the agenda, and plans to get a fire going once the sun starts to set...it's not quite fire weather, but Zoey's been asking for days.
I love this time of year! It marks the beginning of holiday season and largely involves huge quantities of candy...what could be better!

As soon as Fall begins. I drag out all of the Halloween and Fall books for the kiddos. Zoey and I have read our favorite, Room on the Broom, approximately 327 times already, and watched the movie on Netflix two or ten times, too. (You can get the dvd cheap here if you're not on Netflix.)

No big secret that I love children's books. Always have. We have books stashed literally in every room of our house and there's always room for more! Zoey, Beck and I spend a lot of time each day reading, so I thought I'd share a list of our favorite Fall/Halloween books. There's a few different levels here (some I've even shared with 3rd & 4th graders in my past life as a teacher), but I can honestly say, that as of this year, I've read them all with Zoey at one time or another. The kid devours books, so if you've got one of those at home, too, this list is for you. Enjoy!

Halloween-y Books for Young Kids

Room on the Broom
The Berenstain Bears & the Spooky Old Tree
Ghosts in the House
Mouse's First Halloween
Mostly Monsterly
I Need My Monster
Goodnight Goon
Halloween Night
Little Owl's Night
Spider and the Fly**
Pete the Cat: 5 Little Pumpkins
Clifford's Halloween
Carl's Halloween
Ten Timid Ghosts
It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown
Baby Lit: Dracula
Baby Lit: Frankenstein
The Hallo-Weiner
Leaf Man
Stellaluna
Click, Clack, Boo!
Little Blue Truck's Halloween

**I wouldn't read this one before bed if you've got a more sensitive kiddo. Spider nightmares, for sure!

There are some great Halloween books for babies, too. A few that Zoey has liked in the past that we're sharing with Beck this year:

Biscuit's Pet & Play Halloween
It's Pumpkin Day, Mouse!
Where is Baby's Pumpkin?
Duck & Goose Find a Pumpkin

Do you have any favorites on your list?

Friday Five - Hello Fall!

Hey friends! Happy Fall!

There's just something about Fall. The light is different somehow. More...glowy. Season premiers & the sound of football on the tube ALL weekend is kind of the best, but honestly, it's the marching band in the background of the Florida games that takes me right to my happy place. And now that we live in Virginia, the changing leaves and crisp air - open window & fuzzy sock weather (I'm sure that's starting one of these days). I just love it!
I think this year I'm more excited for Fall than ever. Maybe because it was surface-of-the-sun-hot for three months, or maybe it's the new baby and all of the big firsts coming his way in the coming months. Even Zoey is excited for football, Halloween, and a visit to the pumpkin patch. She's at the age now where she kind of gets it, and that makes it all so much fun!

I haven't done a Friday post in such a long time. So here's five favorites for ya on this fall Friday...

I'm such a sucker for a cute flannel shirt...its the 90's girl in me, I guess. I have two of these boyfriend flannels from falls past and they are so cozy and forgiving, especially if you're still holding on to those last few pounds of baby weight. I've got my eye on this one this year.

It's been fall for, like, five minutes, and it's barely stopped raining here in VB. We had so much rain at one point, that the pond behind our house rose at least 4 feet, submerging part of our fence. So I think its time to finally get some rain boots. I've been swooning over a pair of Hunters for years, and I think it's time to pull the trigger once and for all. If I could just decide on the color...hunter green or purple? Or black? Ocean blue? Gah!! I'm sure the minute I make up my mind and buy a pair, the entire mid-Atlantic will be thrown into a terrible drought, but it's worth the risk!

Now that pumpkin spice is everywhere in everything (pumpkin spice chapstick? really?), I'm super over it. So I gave the new Salted Caramel Mocha a try. Chocolate and caramel is one of my favorite flavor combos and it's waayyy better than that old pumpkin spice any day. It'll be perfect once things finally cool off around here.

Cat & Jack, Target's new line for kids. I feel like every time I'm in there, I'm grabbing something new for the kids. Such cute stuff! Zoey is already obsessed with this Halloween T and I can't wait for the temps to cool down a bit more so Beck can wear this romper. - Not an ad, I just seriously love it!

Not particularly fallish, but seriously yum! Z & I tried this banana-Nutella "ice cream" and, you guys, its kind of the best thing ever! The hardest part about this is remembering to freeze the bananas ahead of time. And cleaning the Nutella out of the food processor. That part was kind of a mess. You just throw the two ingredients into the processor, our the mixture into a loaf pan and freeze. We had ours with purple sprinkles, of course!

Hope you guys had a wonderful week! We are looking forward to a weekend full of football and, if the weather cooperates, the Neptune Festival down at the Oceanfront. And if Zoey has her way, we'll start building our pumpkin collection so we can get the place more festive.
Happy weekend!!

Beckett is Three Months Old

Another month has flown by in a blink. Beck is growing like crazy, and is already the sweetest little boy. A flash of those big brown eyes, and my heart just melts. And although he's now fallen into average territory when it comes to his weight, people are still acting like he's the biggest baby ever seen. I guess they make 'em small here in Virginia.

onsie

Three Month Stats
[No doctor's appointment this month, so we took measurement matters into our own hands.]
about 14lbs (48%)  |  24 3/4 in (76%)

I'm pretty smiley & super drooly.
I can fall asleep in a bright, noisy room or even when the vacuum is running, but put me in my crib with some white noise & I'm wiiide awake.
Mommy calls me King of the Cat Naps.
I love to splash in a warm bubble bath, but getting dressed after is kind of the worst.
My hands are delicious!
I've recently discovered my feet and boy are they fascinating!
I'm this close to rolling from by back to my belly.
I'm getting very good at grabbing stuff...especially mommy's hair.

While prepping for this post, I went back and looked at Zoey's three month post. I remember those days so well cuz they were sooo hard. She was such a fussy babe, partly because of digestive issues, partly (we suspect) because she was in pain from her back issues (the fussiness dialed down a bit after she recovered from her surgery at 4 months old). I remember being totally overwhelmed and pretty much home-bound with her because it was just hard on both of us to go anywhere those first few months.
But Beck...he is such a different baby! He's so easy-going and the kid is always smiling or cheerfully chattering away. He can go anywhere at anytime and, unless he's hungry or over-tired, he's so easy to handle. I know I'm probably jinxing myself here, but let me reassure you that life with Beck is not without its issues. He's a total gas-bag, spits up tremendous amounts of milk, and is following in his big sister's footsteps when it comes to crappy naps. But hey, nobody's perfect!

Three and a Half

I'm not sure how it happened, but suddenly I find myself the mother of two. (Anyone who knew me when I was teaching is maybe a little surprised by that. Teaching definitely was great birth control, and I honestly had little desire to have kids of my own.) Now, not only do I have two kids, but one of them is growing up way too fast and it makes me tear up almost every day. It was like when I went to the hospital to have Beck, I left behind this tiny little toddler... and the moment we walked through the door with the new baby, I came home to this big kid. You get a sense of how grown up Zoey's becoming when you pick her up or scoop her into your lap. All legs and arms and heavier than my brain expects her to be. It's an emotional thing for this hormonal momma to deal with, let me tell ya!

So last Friday, Z hit 3 ½. Half-way to four. When she was 6 months old, we started the tradition of celebrating with half a cake and a gift or two. And this year the plan was no different. So on Saturday, the kid and I set out to make a chocolate cake, and it turned out delicious. Moist and chocolatey, you guys, it was perfection...except for one small detail. Not sure how or why, but the cake came out of the pan in a huge mess. So, after a few moments of swearing panicking (I mean, it was totally ruined and here we were, all of us, excited to eat cake! Disaster!), I figured chocolate covered cake balls could be a clever way to salvage this mess of a cake. (And they were! So good!)

But before we turned the cake disaster into delicious treats, Damon had the awesome idea to pick up some donuts on Sunday morning. And although she was super excited by the donut surprise, this was the best she could do for pictures.

And because she's 3 (and a half!), she is inexplicably saddened by the donuts. Her two favorite flavors. Whatever, kid. Life with a three year old, amiright?

These days, Z is silly and sweet and sassy and sensitive. And, like with most girls her age, I'm sure, it's a roller coaster of emotions. She loves to dance and sing and make us laugh. She's recently started making up little songs while she plays, and when she thinks no one is paying any attention will belt them out in the most hilarious ways. She asks for "seven more minutes" for just about everything, insists on wearing socks on her hands at bedtime, randomly announces "I like zebras...and purple. I don't like rocket ships.", loves wearing her Nemo swim cap in the shower, and confidently proclaimed, "I wanna do that!" during each Olympic even she watched.

I've been so impressed by how sweet she is with Beck. The transition to life with a new baby has been a little tough, but through it all, she just loves "her" baby so much!

Three and a Half Favorites
Color: Purple!
Foods: Pickles (she's never had pickles) and grapes.
Treats: Kisses (the Hershey kind, not the smoochy kind)
Toy: Kiki (duh!)
Books: Gerald and Piggie!! (The Piggie & Elephant series by Mo Willems.)
Songs: Cake song (Cake by the Ocean) and Elsa's song (I think she means Let it Go, but who knows.)
Movie: Frozen, Snoopy Movie, Nemo and Dory
TV Shows: Sheriff Callie and the ants (She means Beat Bugs on Netflix)
Animal: Zebras, mommy.
Place to go: A tiny tiny store with the little house and the toys. (This would be a kids boutique and consignment shop we go to. They have great toys,)
Thing to do outside: Chalk
Thing to do inside: I like to DANCE! (This was said with a little bootie shake, of course.)
What do you want to be when you grow up? Uhh...big!

So there you have it. I tiny peek into the mind of your average three and a half year old.

Beckett is Two Months Old

Monday marked Beck's two month birthday, so we celebrated by taking him to the pediatrician to receive a whole mess of shots. The whole family was in on the visit, with hopes that baby brother would be a good role model for big sis (who was under direction to watch for similarities between Dr. Hutchinson and Doc McStuffins. Check your ears, check your eyes, find out how much you've grown...) Beckett handled the whole doctor experience waaaayyyy better than Zoey ever has, so I consider that a major win. It never ceases to amaze me how different these two kids of mine are already.

Two Month Stats
13 lbs 2 oz (69th %)   |   23.5 inches (70th %)
My sister loves to hold me and kiss me. I think it's all ok.
I'm starting to giggle (mostly in my sleep) and I smile all the time.
I have a lot to say, but no one seems to know what I'm talking about.
I love to chew on my hands, my binky, and mommy or daddy's fingers.
I take an epic nap in the morning, but make mommy work for naps the rest of the day.
My favorite song is the Cups song from Pitch Perfect. It calms me down every time.
I can sleep for five hours straight! But not every night...I like to keep my parents guessing.
I'm losing my newborn hair.
I don't love tummy time unless I'm on the boppy, even though my kicking legs are gonna send me over the top one day soon.
Looking at myself in the mirror is my favorite past time
I'm a bit of a gas bag and I'm constantly blowing out my diapers with my rocket poo. Mommy says it's jet-propelled!
I refuse to sleep in my crib for longer than 10 minutes, but will sleep like a champ literally anywhere else.

Can you guys believe that on Friday, Z hits 3 ½?!!! My mind boggles! Working on a little update about how or big kid is doing...coming soon!

Beckett is One Month Old!

I've been a bit of a slacker lately with the whole blogging thing. We're still getting adjusted to our new life as a family of four, and I feel like there's so much on my to-do list every day that blogging gets pushed to the bottom of the list. I heard somewhere that one kid is one kid, but two is like a hundred. Actually, it might have been Kim Kardashian, but she was totally right! It can be so overwhelming at times, and it's hard to not feel like a horrible mother when Kid #1 is left playing on her own (or watching Daniel Tiger) for what feels like forever while you deal with Kid #2 (or, you know, pee).
But, as of last Friday, we've survived a full month, and now that we're finally figuring out Beck's eat/play/sleep routine, I think we're doing just fine.

I can't believe how much he's already changed!!

It's crazy to look back and see how ginormous I was. The "fourty" (haha!) week pic was taken just two days before Beck was born!

One Month Stats
About 10 lbs  & 22 ½ in long
I have black hair, grayish-brown eyes, & the longest eyelashes ever
I love to grunt & chirp in my sleep, watch the ceiling fans, to hold big sis's hand during diaper changes, and bath time.
I hate to be swaddled, but love sleeping in the Solly wrap.
I can smile at mommy & hold my head up at tummy time.
I hate waiting to eat!
Mommy & Daddy call me "Bubbaloo," "Little Man," & "Big Guy"
Big Sis calls me "Babe"

And just like that, another First Month is in the books. (Or, in this case, first month plus one week!) I want to tell him to quit growing up, but really, maybe just a little bit. Cuz a full night's sleep would be amazing right now!

He's Here! - Part 2 - Another Baby, Another NICU

Yep. You read that correctly. The day after Beckett was born, we ended up in the NICU...again. Thankfully, the whole situation was not as serious or terrifying as what we went through with Z (you can read about that here), thank God!

You may remember that I had to go through the one-hour glucose screen a second time at about 34 weeks, due to my "advanced" age (I was a few weeks from my 40th birthday), and the fact that I was expected to deliver a behemoth baby. My levels were slightly elevated (probably thanks to the peanut butter toast I had for breakfast - stupid idea!) and I had to undergo the horrible 3 hour fasting test the next week. This time, my numbers were practically hypoglycemic, which is actually pretty normal for me. No big surprise there, and the subject was immediately dropped. And then I ended up having a not-so-behemoth baby, at least by our standards.

Beck weighed in at 8lbs 14oz. Not tiny by any standard, but certainly not gigantic. Or so we thought. By the reactions of pretty much every single person we came into contact with, you would have thought he was the size of a Volkswagen. We thought it was ridiculous, but whatever - he still wore newborn size diapers...how big could he be? Anyway, because Beck was considered LGA - large for gestational age (which begins at 8lb 13oz, btw) - they began testing his blood sugar every two hours. Apparently there is a risk for hypoglycemia, though it was never really explained to us. You hear "blood sugar", you think diabetes. And because such a big deal was made about my possibly having gestational diabetes, which was such a joke, we just assumed that was what the problem was.

Well, we were moved to the Mother & Baby side of the maternity floor, and a nurse came in every couple of hours to check me out and to test Beck's blood sugar. Apparently, protocols had recently changed and we could never get a clear answer as to what the magic number was, but apparently, he never hit it. So, since they didn't administer IVs in the Well Baby nursery, Beck had to be moved to the NICU to get hooked into a bag of dextrose to help regulate his sugar levels. Thankfully, the NICU was just down the hall, but the neonatologist was a super douche about the whole thing. He never really explained anything, just said "If you don't let us admit him, your baby could have BRAIN DAMAGE" and left us. We pretty much had no choice. I was still in my hormonal daze and we were both exhausted. Our brains were spinning and all of our previous NICU baggage came back to the surface. We just wanted to be lazy and enjoy our time with our new baby before we returned to the chaos of home. No such luck. At that point, that douchey doctor could have said just about anything and we would have gone along with it.

Within the hour, Beck was moved and two sweet NICU nurses hooked up his IV and all the monitors. Damon was quietly freaking out. I tried to keep it positive. We were told it would just be overnight. I could pop in to nurse and snuggle whenever I wanted and then we'd have him back the following evening. Except that it never really worked out. Still not getting any clear answers, Beck's numbers would be great three draws in a row, and the fourth would be deemed too low, so they needed his numbers to read consistently high. But how high, we never knew. He was otherwise completely healthy. Showed no other symptoms, whatever those were. Someone decided that they needed to supplement with formula and (we are certain) he was overfed. All in the name of getting his numbers up. By day three, (yes. day. three.) they had weaned Beck off the dextrose, still supplemented my milk with formula, and although he was showing great numbers, we still had no info from that horrible doctor and no two nurses could give us the same answer. What had to happen for us to take him home?!

I had already been discharged with flying colors, Zoey was home with my mom and was slowly unravelling, and we were longing to bring our baby boy home. In our eyes, there was no reason for him to still be there. The only healthy baby in the NICU. And the word "hypoglycemia" was never uttered. We found out after we were all discharged, that Beck's numbers were fine for at least 36 hours. So what the hell were we still doing there? Well, it was the weekend. Were they waiting till Monday to discharge? Insane.

The nurse practitioner that was on duty on Sunday - Father's Day- told us Beck's numbers were fine and Damon would be getting his Father's Day wish. We were taking the kid home! I really think the weekend nurse who had been tending to Beck was pushing for us, too. Actually, all of the nurses were wonderful, just not clear on these new protocols.

Honestly, this post has been so hard to write, partly cuz I'm still pissed and partly cuz I still can't wrap my head around the whole thing. If Beck had weighed a few less ounces, would they have even checked his blood sugar in the first place? Was any of this even necessary? We will never know. I can tell you that Beck is perfect. He eats well, sleeps well, and poops...a lot. Basically the newborn hat trick. And Zoey, well, she's almost 3 ½, so she's a challenge from time to time, but she's totally in love with her baby.

Baby #2 - He's Here! - Part One

You guys, so much has happened since my last post! All of it centered around our sweet little man, Beckett Matthew!

Born June 15 at 4:48pm
8lbs 14oz      21in
(No one can really agree on his length. Every document is different, anywhere from 20 - 21 ¾ in.
I decided to just split the difference!)

I was scheduled to be induced at 40 weeks + 2 days. Apparently, when you're over a certain age, going full term is no bueno. But, since I was fit and had a healthy pregnancy, (and after seeking out a second opinion from another one of my doctors) I was allowed to go full term. I really didn't want to deal with induction, after hearing a lot of negative stories through the years. And even though so many of you guys shared your positive induction tales, I still was totally freaked out about it. I kinda felt like the kid would come when he was ready.
The day before my induction, I had an appointment with an ultrasound, a non-stress test, and an exam. The ultrasound showed that baby boy was squished, but in great shape (and weighing in at around 8 ½ lbs), the non-stress test showed that his heart was strong, and my exam showed that although I had been progressing (yay for dilation!), he was in no rush to make his way into the world. But the PA said something during my exam that stuck with me...lots of women tend to go into labor in the 24 hours after an exam. Now, I can't be sure, but I swear she did something to help things along. Because 12 hours later, things got started.

By 1am, I started timing my contractions, and by 4am, I was waking Damon to head to the hospital. My contractions got intense quickly, but were wildly erratic. Some were 20 minutes apart, then I'd have a few that were less than a minute apart, then I'd just have one long continuous cramp. It made me nervous, so I just wanted to get to the hospital. By the time I made it into the birthing room, things were progressing, and the bag of pitocin just sat on the cart. I was in terrible pain, so by mid-morning, they called in the anesthesiologist, who got my epidural going. Although getting the epidural was a painful experience this time (mostly my fault as I was going through one of those extra long contractions at the time and just couldn't relax), I was so happy to have it, I could have kissed that doctor on the lips!
I have always had pretty low blood pressure, and this time, it posed a tiny problem...After the epidural got going and they had me lay flat, I started feeling sick. I totally thought it was just my reflux, so I asked the nurse if I could sit up. Then I started feeling light headed and my ears were ringing. The nurse asked if I also was seeing stars, which I wasn't, but man, was the room spinning. She pushed some epinephrine into my iv and I instantly felt better. Turns out, the epidural caused my blood pressure to bottom out and I was a second away from completely passing out! The nurse said she'd never seen it happen so quickly! After that excitement, things settled down and were pretty routine. Damon and I spent the day watching HGTV while nurses popped in and out to check me and offer me popsicles. I was starving, by now it was lunchtime and I hadn't eaten since dinner the night before and all I could think about was grilled cheese sandwiches and fries. Not quite the same, but it would have to do...give me all. the. popsicles!!!
By the time Ellen was on at 3, baby boy was showing no signs of dropping, even after my doctor broke my water, so the nurse brought in Mr. Peanut - similar to one of those exercise balls, but peanut shaped...obvi. I had to lay on my side and throw one leg over the peanut. Totally ridiculous and unexpectedly comfortable. Wish I had taken a picture! I'm not sure how, but it worked...by the time the nurse returned to do a test push, I was ready for the real deal. Just like with Zoey, three contractions and pushes later...baby Beck was on my chest, all perfect and gross and covered in goo. Amazing!

Zoey came to meet Beck the next day, and was a little unsure at first. it didn't take long for her to slip into her role as big sis. She's totally smitten!

I wish I could say that we spent our time at the hospital staring at our beautiful boy and being taken care of by the nurses before we all went home together. That's only part truth (the nurses were all amazing!). I did finally get a grilled cheese that I inhaled in about three bites! But because of Beck's "large" size (which is ludicrous in my opinion), he had some issues with his blood sugar. I'll tell you now that he's totally fine, but there's definitely a story there. A story for another post.

Always such a grumpy face!
